Bio:
Pagram was an Australian Writer, Artist, and Illustrator originally from London UK. He Wrote/Co-wrote and/or Illustrated at least 9 Books before emigrating to Perth, Western Australia in June 1965, and then at least another 5 Books before 1970 while living in Perth, where he continued working as an artist until his passing in 2007.
Pagram appears to be an extremely underrated Artist when considering the Quality and Quantity of his Work; even more so, when taking into account his other life activities.
He was born in 1927 to a working-class family in Edmonton, North London. He left school at 14 and had no artistic ambitions. At that time, he worked in a factory and on a building site before enlisting in the navy. Eventually, due to a Ministry of Labour grant, he trained as a sign-writer, impressing his teacher so much that he was advised to transfer to drawing and illustration. He never finished his training, but kept working as an artist, saying he had ‘been kept at art by my uselessness at anything else’.
Pagram has written children’s books such as The World of Willy Whiskers (1963), and Higgledy-Piggledy Island (1963).
In 1963, he published A View of London, a book of charcoal drawings inspired by his home city. English writer Colin Wilson (1931 – 2013), who wrote the introduction, was the author of The Outsider and one of the original 1950s ‘angry young men’.
Pagram’s extensive body of work included illustrating for two novels by Anthony Burgess (1917 – 1993): The Eve of St Venus (1964) and A Vision of Battlements (1965). Burgess became friends with Pagram, and often invited him to dinner at his house in Etchingham in the mid-1960s.
He also illustrated a cover for Tender is the Night by American novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald.
He met and married his wife, Joan Bennett (1927 - 2012) and had three children.
In June 1965, the Pagram family migrated to Perth on the P&0 Lines Ship Orcades.
In 1967, Pagram supplied paintings and drawings for the publication Faces of Perth by architect Paul Ritter (1925 – 2010).
